Beloveds!

Spring has sprung in the lush green mountains of Western North Carolina, and we are starting to prepare for a beautiful, wrenching, and sacred midsummer celebration of the life of Beatriz Carmen Mendoza. Once again, Bea’s incomparable spirit draws us together! A small team of friends and family is joining forces to create and hold this space with you all.

Bea’s Celebration of Life will happen on July 5-7th at Sparklebark Farm: 180 Stoney Knob Rd. Weaverville, NC 28787.

This space will be what we make it. We want to celebrate Bea’s life by continuing to weave together the people and places that she loved. And we know that preparing and sharing delicious meals, making playful and meaningful art, exploring the hills and hollers of the Appalachians, and leaving a place better than we found it are all ways we keep connecting with Bea’s spirit and each other.

The planning team will be supportive of folks securing housing, transportation, and meals, as well as coordinating a formal program of music, reflections, readings, and the like on Saturday. We’ll also be organizing chances for art making (bookbinding, screenprinting, and more) and Sparklebark beautification (from needed upkeep to new construction). Finally, we’ll ensure opportunities for campfires, hiking, swimming, and other outdoor adventures.

While there will be some structure to the schedule, there will also be a lot of open space for relaxing, connecting, playing music, playing with kiddos, etc. In Bea’s generous style, we encourage you to offer the space whatever moves you- a song, a story, a speech, a really good snack! Dream big!

HOUSING

If you are able, we lovingly ask that you please arrange your own accomodations in the Asheville area with with friends or loved ones or consider renting a spot for the weekend. Our local host crew- the wonderful Juniper and Shannon- are working to match folks with community housing and camping when necessary and possible.

We will be able to host a limited number of people in beds and camping at Sparklebark, and will prioritize those with special needs, folks doing a lot of labor to make the Celebration possible, and folks who register promptly! Please don’t plan to show up and crash the camping, y’all. Connect with Shannon and Juniper about your options: szambricki@gmail.com.

logistics and accommodations

***Even if you think we already know you are coming, PLEASE complete a registration form ! It will be so very helpful for our planning purposes. If you have any changes with your plans at any point, please email us at szambricki@gmail.com and keep us in the loop. Please do not show up completely unannounced. Everyone’s invited but we are putting in a lot of work to make this gathering happen.

TRANSPORTATION:

Our local host team has generously offered to help organize rides to and from Sparklebark and the Asheville airport! Amazing! Beyond that, please do your best to self-organize transportation and let us know if you need more information about getting around the area. Sparklebark is not particularly bikeable. More information about parking will be available closer to July.

FOOD

Our incredible volunteer kitchen crew will provide LUNCH and DINNER on FRIDAY and SATURDAY and a BRUNCH for everyone on Sunday. For those camping at Sparklebark we ask folks collectively self-organize around breakfast.
